Health of Students

My goal is to help our students maintain optimal health so they can fully take advantage of the educational opportunities offered to them. I am available as a health resource for students, parents and faculty

Parents are encouraged to contact me with any health concerns that may affect your child during the school day. I appreciate the opportunity to work with students and parents to provide a safe, healthy environment for learning.

If your child has any food allergies, please contact the school nurse.

First Aid

First aid will be given for minor injuries only. If injuries are serious, the parents/guardians will be contacted, but if we are unable to reach them, the student will be taken to the hospital at the expense of the parents/guardian. If a child becomes ill at school, parents/guardians will be called. Please be sure the correct emergency, work and primary phone numbers are reported to the school office.

 Health Guidelines

If your child has a fever of 100 degrees or above, or has vomited in the past 24 hours, please do not send him/her to school. Students with these symptoms need to be at home so they can recover. Sending the child to school needlessly exposes other children to germs. You will be contacted to pick your child up from school if he/she has a temperature >100 degrees and or is otherwise ill.

Students should not return to school until 24 hours after fever breaks, without aid of fever reducing medication, vomiting has ceased or until 24 hours of antibiotic therapy is completed.

 Medication Administration

 Over the counter-requires parental consent.

Prescription- Requires a written doctor order and parent signature. Medication must be brought in by parent and in original labeled container.

Inhalers- Requires appropriate form filled out and inhaler stored in nurses office or parental release for child to keep in back pack.

 School Health Program

In addition to handling the day-to-day various health issues, accidents or emergency situations, the school nurse is responsible for carrying out annual health screenings required by the state.

The school nurse performs annual hearing screens on students in grades Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and all new students or if a parent or teacher requests.

The school nurse performs annual vision screens on students in grades Pre-K, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and all new students or if a parent or teacher requests.

Genesis Family Health comes in one time a year and performs dental screens on all student’s Pre-K through 12th grade. A paper is sent home prior to their screen date to allow parents to sign consent for fluoride or no screen as well.

Parents will be notified if results from vision or hearing screening need further evaluation. Screening results become a part of the child’s school health record. Following dental screens, a paper with results is sent home. If any parent or guardian wishes for their student to be opted out from screenings, just let the school nurse know.

New students and preschool or kindergarten students enrolling for the first time need to provide current immunization records, current health physical by doctor and state certified birth certificate.

For current immunization requirements visit https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/214/Immunizations. Immunizations must be compliant within 90 days of starting school.  Medical and religious exemption forms are available upon request to keep on file for those who don’t wish to immunize.

“Students must be healthy to be educated and educated to be healthy.”
